The Impressionists’ Dinner Party
Dimensions: 11ft x 15.2ft x 9ft
Wallpaper Materials: Book pages, liquid starch
Using old artist retrospectives of Impressionist artists, I created a college student, rental unit paramatered dining haven. The space is open on all four sides (by windows on the north and east, and openings to adjacent rooms on the other two). It created a very exposed sensation while eating. The complicated visual beauty brings in the walls, creating a feeling of intimacy while the white reflects light throughout the space: intimate and airy, all in one. The furniture was accrued and collected in my travels between Ohio and Ithaca.
Not often the first thought upon seeing the space, it is truly sustainable. The pages are all from used books, almost all of the furniture and decor was thrifted or secondhand. The only things exhausting finite materials were the 1.5 gallons of liquid starch and the polypropylene of the newly purchased panton. This space is a rebuttal to the idea that sustainable choices have to be either costly or ugly.
