Connections

Materials: recycled wooden slats from 1970’s fouton, reclaimed wood from an old deck

This bench is a gift. A gift for my family, for the guests who drop in. A gift for my sibling’s future late night talks with partners to come and my parents’ repose of fresh air. The lack of back support will force them to keep their posture upright. The lack of delineated personal space will force them to sit close; the cantilevered seat hanging over an unsturdy base requires the balance of two (or the exact middle for one), inducing physical contact and therefore an elevated emotional connection. The curves of the seat will produce a comfortable seat for extended stays for any and all bodies. This bench is more than just some recycled pieces from an old porch and a 1988 futon—it’s a catalyst for wellbeing and connection.
